Gamers! Why you should press start

Hello there, I’m here this week to talk to you about the 4 reasons you should be watching Gamers! on Crunchyroll and Funimation Now!

Gamers! for those who don’t know is a romantic high school comedy about Keita Amano, a young nerdy and unashamed gamer who plays, essentially just for fun. One day he is invited by the schools gorgeous Karen Tendo to join the Game Club with her! His actions and interactions with Tendo bring the attention of Tasuku Uehara, his girlfriend Aguri and Tendo’s classmate Chiaki Hoshinomori. What ensues is a mess of high school romance and a comedy that at times had me leaving my chair and needing a break from how sheer hilarious it is.

The References

Gamers! is unsahamedly geared towards video gamers of all genres and the show definitely managed to tickle me referencing both my love for the Tales series and the not often discussed Star Ocean series. PUBG, Resident Evil and fighting games also get referenced in this series and this is definitely a reason to watch it! Picking out a glaringly obvious reference to one of your faviroute games makes for a fun viewing experience. I legitimately screamed when I saw Tales of Phantasia referenced in the 2nd episode. You might spot some refrences I missed! That’s a good enough reason to start watching…

The arguably well written characters

Romcom anime are often funny but I rarely find myself so interested and enjoying of the characters. Now let’s not get too exicted, this show isn’t My Hero Academia or Psycho Pass levels of well written. But for a rom com there seams to be an extra level of detail in the writing of these characters. A huge example is how Amano spends 3 or so minutes discussing what games mean to him, how he’s very much not competitive but still likes to win. It’s a huge and important part of his character. A lot of the dialouge (I watched the Funimation Dub) was fantastically handled and delivered making each character also just feel alive. Tando is another great example in that she’s fantastically funny and interesting to watch.

The commentary on video games

Something that I actually found myself enjoying in this show is when the characters pause to explain (often to the gaming newbie Arguri) the state of the video games industry. The entire show gave multiple sides of the issue from the enthusiastic “let’s just have fun” people to the cynical “companies are bad” points of view. It was interesting to watch and listen to discussions about the video game industry in a medium very closely ascociated with it.  You can tell both the original light novel author and especially the animation studio are very hardcore fans of video gaming. The show isn’t particulary ham fisted about this as well, it trickles in facts and debates inbetween characters personalities. Potentially because I’m more invested in the industry but I found myself enjoying the discussion that was bought to me by this show.

The just well written romantic comedy

Honestly, I’m a sucker for a romcom anime. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou and School Rumble are two of my faviroute shows I have ever watched and this show is honestly just as funny. The show manages to do something I very much enjoy in anime and that’s Surreal humour. This show manages to offer surreal humour in a way that’s very relatable. A lot of the shows jokes and humour is based on characters (being in high school) not talking or communicating properly, a very common issue in that period of a persons life. It’s a form of comedy you can enjoy for the hilarity of what’s going on but also a form of comedy you can relate to.
