Geek in a Week: RTX London 2017

Hi there, long time no see! It’s your favourite geek corespondent here with another exciting Geek in a Week special! Over the past few week’s we’ve seen some cool castings,  revelations, radical reveals and some shocking spoilers! But last weekend I attended a pretty special convention, the first of it’s kind in the UK; RTX London 2017! so without further ado let’s dive right in!

What is RTX?

RTX stands for Rooster Teeth Expo, set up by the company Rooster Teeth on April 1st 2003. Rooster Teeth was co-founded by Burnie Burns, Matt Hullum, Gus Sorola, Joel Heyman, Geoff Ramsey and Jason Saldana, and currently make gaming and animated related videos as well as podcasts and even a live action movie. Their most famous web productions include Red vs Blue, RWBY and Camp Camp. Rooster Teeth started as a really small company and now has over 250 employees, from attending conventions such as Comic Con when they first began, to now hosting their own conventions for their millions of fans worldwide.

The Convention

RTX first began in August 2011, set in Rooster Teeth’s home town; Austin Texas. Since then RTX has expanded to Sydney Australia and now in London, United Kingdom. The convention was held at the ExCel Centre in London, on the 14th and 15th of October. Full of exhibitors, gaming stalls, panels, and live versions of the company’s most famous live shows & podcasts, there were games and merchandise and cosplay and queues, but I was lucky enough to attend 2 panels. The Lazer Team 2 Panel and the Writers Block Panel, as well as being able to witness live versions of the official Off Topic Podcast and the RT Podcast.

Lazer Team 2

The first panel of the event and the fist panel I managed to see, The Lazer Team 2 panel was a sneak preview of the sequel to Rooster Teeth’s first ever movie. A science fiction comedy starring some of the cast from Rooster Teeth, the premise is that an incoming alien invasion must be stopped by the champion of Earth with a special weapon. But when the weapon gets separated to 4 inexperienced nobody’s, the fate of the Earth is in their hands. The panel featured the film’s stars Burnie Burns, Gavin Free, Michael Jones and the film’s director Matt Hullum. I won’t spoil much of the panel but it was great to be one of the first people to get a sneak preview of the film! Lazer Team 2 will be released on November 12th.

Writers Block

The second and last panel from the writers of some of Rooster Teeth’s best live and animated content. The Panel was really just an insight for their writing process, how to overcome writer block and how to deal with anxiety and criticism of your work. Truly inspiring to watch and listen to, and how honest and down to Earth these people truly are, to listen to how they’ve struggled to write for some of our favourite content. They were also able to answer questions to potential writers in the audience with their problems, provide feedback on any work! Matt Hullum, Burnie Burns, Miles Luna, Aaaron Marquis and Chris Demaris really know their stuff!

Off Topic Podcast

Achievement Hunter’s official podcast, and usually defined as chaotic at best, and it definitely shows! Hosted by former Rage Quit Michael Jones, this episode featured Geoff Ramsey, Gavin Free, Jeremy Dooley and special guest…. James Buckley aka Jay from The Inbetweeners! This podcast was a joy to behold and was great to see James Buckley back as a special treat for RTX London, after appearing in some of their videos before hand. Although I don’t think I should repeat was what discussed, but was a great day to end the first day.

RT Podcast

The main event; The Rooster Teeth Podcast, midday on Sunday at the centre stage and boy was it popular! Attendees were queuing when doors opened. After queuing for the shop that morning we were hoping that would give us a better view of the stage. After waiting on the sides, me and my coursemate May finally got our chance! Here are some of the photos I managed to take of Burnie Burns, Gus Sorola, Gavin Free and Barbara Dunkelman!

Although I wasn’t lucky enough to get an official signing, I did manage to run into some very special people…

And here is Jeremy “Lil J” Dooley, previously a fan of the company and now hired as a main cast member of Lets Play’s Achievement Hunter. Known for his rap videos for Rooster Teeth known as RT Throwdowns. One of my favourite members to watch so it was a real honour to meet him! Can I get a HAP HAP!

But the greatest moment of the weekend, seeing my friends from university again and just doing what we always do; drink, play games and making each other laugh. Thanks guys, you’re the best!
