Hi there and welcome back to Geek in a Week, this is your fellow correspondent Jac with this week’s Geek in a Week! It’s getting oh so closer to the return of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow and that means the next couple of posts will be dedicated to these shows, as but I will hopefully squeeze in some extra pieces of news that pop up over the next coming weeks! I’m still buzzing after watching the new Kingsman sequel and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you guys so without further ado let’s put on our finest suits and grab a bottle of Kentucky’s finest whisky!
Be warned there may be major spoilers ahead;
This Week’s Headline News: Kingsman: The Golden Circle hit’s the theatres!
Kingsman: The Golden Circle was officially released in theatres on 20th September, and I saw it on 23rd in the new Cineworld in Bracknell, but in a special 4D Showing! This is where the seats in the theatre are on hydraulics and move with the camera in various scenes, like a car chase. There is also wind, strobe lighting, fog, rain and gas present to enhance the viewing and I think it really helps! You really think you’re in the film and it’s incredible! I can’t wait to see Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars: The Last Jedi in this theatre!
Now for the film; I really enjoyed it and is a solid sequel next to the first, even though I think the first film is slightly better. The Golden Circle carries on some time after the events of the first film, after an epic taxi chase (again) with Eggsy, the Kingsman Headquarters and the Shop are blown up and with no oher choice, Eggsy and Merlin travel to America to meet their American Cousins; The Statesmen who are almost identical to the team but are in the liquor business instead of tailoring. They must learn to work together to take down Poppy Addams, a drug lord operating in South America who manages to contaminate every type of drug in the world which will eventually painfully kill the user. She wants to win the war on drugs by forcing the president of the United States to legalise her drug supply, and give her immunity and total control of the drug trade, not to mention give her company: Poppy Pharmaceuticals immense profit.
I won’t go into too much detail into spoiler territory (at least I’ll try) but my main conclusion is that it is worth a watch if you’re a fan of the comic and film. There are some things in the sequel which surprised me in a good way and a bad way, as I thought certain events in the film would carry out differently. Although Mathew Vaughn, the film’s writer and director has stated he would like Kingsman to be a trilogy, no word has been said on if the film will get a third outing but I think it is definite it will as it has been a success. What are your thoughts on the film? Did you enjoy it? Are you a Kingsman or a Statesman? Do you want there to be another film? Let us know what you think!

Now off to the casting corner, and a fan favourite actor will portray a brand new superhero on the CW…
Russell Tovey Cast as The Ray!

Yes the Waverider will be getting another new addition for Season 3, and joining them will be Raymond Terill, also known as “The Ray”. He will be played by none other than Russell Tovey, which you may recognise Tovey from classic roles including Doctor Who, Sherlock and Being Human as well as countless more. Raymond Terrill was the son of the first Ray, Langford Terrill and can turn his entire body into a living laser! In the comics he was raised by his unclue whom he thought ws his father and was kept in the dark in his formative years about his powers and found them difficult to control as times. He is currently a member of the team known as The Freedom Fighters, a team from Dimension-X dedicated to stop the Nazis in an alternate Earth. In the live action shows, the Ray has been described as:
“Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers.”
The Ray will star in the animated series of The Freedom Fighters which will air on the CW Seed online, but will make his live-action debut on 27th November as a part of the CW crossover, speaking of which…
Marc Guggenheim and the cast from all the shows have been teasing us for a while what the crossover will be; from mentioning that Supergirl and her sister Kara will be the focus, the formation of the Legion of Super-Heroes and the wedding of Iris West and Barry Allen. Now that it has been confirmed that our heroes will be travelling to Earth-X in this awesome comic inspired poster!
Earth-X is an alternative version of Earth where the Allies lost the Second World War and the Nazis and Germany claimed victory. Because of this victory, the Green Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and heroes alike are evil. It is rumoured that the CW’s version of Earth-X is their vision of the Crime Syndicate of America, twisted evil mirrored versions of the Justice League from Earth 3. The main characters that will appear in this year’s crossover are decorated on the outside of the poster, which are;
Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific
Dinah Drake/Black Canary
Rene Ramirez/Wild Dog
Barry Allen/The Flash
Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost
Sarah Lance/White Canary
Raymond Palmer/The Atom
Jefferson Jackson & Martin Stein/Firestorm
Zari Adrianna Tomaz/Isis
Raymond Terrill/The Ray
Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers/Supergirl
Wow! That’s a lot! This does raise questions though, such as will other heroes like Kid-Flash and Martian Manhunter won’t appear? What about Felicity Smoak and Quentin Lance? Are they not going to be around either? If you look closer at the poster, will that mean that villains such as Captain Cold are heroes on Earth-X? We know that this year All 4 shows will be involved with the crossover and not just 3, and it’ll be like a 4 hour TV Movie not as disjointed. The crossover will start with Supergirl and Arrow on 27th November with the episodes “Greater Foes” and “Greater Loss”, and continues on the 28th November with The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow with “Greater Threat” and “Greater Menace” respectively. We’ll have to wait for our wedding invitations for this colossal crossover extravaganza!
And finally for our video of the week is our first look at the new Tomb Raider Reboot, plus the poster! Check it out!
And now for the trailer!
I’ll be honest I am impressed with the trailer but I have a sinking feeling that the film may just sink! The story is basically about a young woman attempting to find her lost father and his discovery of a mysterious relic, and unfortunately meets up with some tomb raiders who are also looking for this artefact while being a total boss…tomb raiders…get it? Oh well…
The poster and trailer want us to know that Alicia Vikander is the new Lara Croft and want us to forget about the old films, which yes they were cheesy but also memorable for young children/teenagers, so will there be any references at all to the past franchise? Tomb Raider has a lot of big shoes to fill, as there will be fans of the game, the original films and video games in general will be concerned as video game based films always seem to be negative, but will Tomb Raider continue the curse or be a diamond in the rough? We’ll have to wait until the 16th March, 2018.
That’s all to report for now, but come back on Friday for your fix of weekly geek news, as i’ll be looking at the top 10 characters that should appear on Supergirl this season, as well as all the geeky gossip and nerdy news.
Until then this is Jac, signing out.
