Geek in a Week: Week 5, Part 2

Hi there and welcome back, this is your fellow geek correspondent Jac with this week’s Geek in a Week! Same old format again majorly this week looking at Casting Corner (yes I have just made up this name and sticking to it) in particular looking at Star Wars, Arrow and Hellboy, and a lot of Hellboy, so without further ado let’s head back to a galaxy far far away or lets get beamed up by Scotty (Whichever you prefer).

Be warned there maybe some spoilers ahead;

This week’s headline news: J.J. Abrams is new Star Wars director and writer

Yes as a follow up to Monday’s headline news, this week’s is also Star Wars themed as on the 12th September it was announced that the untitled Episode 9 is none other than… J.J. Abrams! Yes J.J. is returning to the Star Wars universe to direct the final film in the new trilogy which he started! If you didn’t already know, J.J. has successfully directed the newer Star Trek film from 2009 and it’s 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, and of course Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens! Personally I’m so happy he is the final director as he did an incredible job of bringing back the franchise to our screens and making it credible once more. He will return to co-write the final film with Chris Terrio (Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League) and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan and Abrams himself. So what are your thoughts on this story? Does this reassure your faith in the force of the Star Wars Franchise? Star Wars Episode 9 will be released on 20th December 2019 whilst Episode 8 will be on our screens 15th December 2017.

Off to Casting corner now and one piece of crucial casting I happened to miss last week (sorry!) was Liam Hall (Lucifer, Once Upon  Time) as the son of Deathstroke the Terminator himself, Joseph Wilson.

In the comics, Joseph is the son of Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke who eventually becomes a hero with mind control powers under the name of Jericho and an on and off villain of the Teen Titans. It is unknown if he will appear as a hero or a villain at first in the show, or even if he has appeared before. It is possible that Joseph Wilson could be the identity of the unknown anti-hero Vigilante from last year. This could make sense as he may have a vendetta against Oliver for attempting to murder/imprison his father but may be unlikely as in the show he will be stuck in a Kasnian prison and a former A.S.I.S. agent.

Deathstroke’s family history in the show will be expanded on further, as we’ve heard tales of his family and sons a daughter (Back in the first season I believe is when he first mentioned Joe). In the comics Slade has a daughter named Rose who becomes another Deathstroke clone named Ravager, although we saw Ravager it was the codename for another character from the comics to transition into the series; Isabel Rochev in season 2 of Arrow. We’ve also seen his second son Grant appear in Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 as an incarnation of Deathstroke from an alternate future. Will we see some references to Grant or that future? Joeseph Wilson will appear in a 2 part episode in season 6 focusing on Slade himself, and Arrow itself will return to the small screen on 12th October.

Speaking of castings, we also have a triple threat this week from the 2018 Hellboy reboot!  First off, remember when we had that whole controversy about Ed Skrein playing the Asian character Major Benjamin Daimo? Well the film may have found a suitable replacement; Daniel Dae Kim.

An actor that you may not have heard of but has very good film and TV credits, most noticeably as Chin Ho Kelly from Hawaii Five-O, and also roles in Lost, ER and Spider-Man 2. The character of Ben Daimo has been described as a “Rugged military member of the bureau for paranormal research and defense who, due to a supernatural encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain”. The film seems to be progressively moving forward and actually listening to its audience may be a smart move, but it’s a different story to tell once the first footage has been released. Speaking of moving forward, we actually have our first look of David Harbour as the titular Hellboy. Drum roll please……

HE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Personally I may prefer this version just because the skin looks darker and may actually suit its R rating. Even though it will be difficult to compare the incredibly performance from Ron Pearlman (Please at least consider him for a cameo) and I may be slightly bitter that Hellboy is getting the reboot treatment instead of the greenlight for a third film, I’m generally happy with the new look as it still keeps his gloved hand, cut-off horns. If it’s not broke don’t fix it, right? And to top it off we also have an official release date from Lionsgate;

11th January, 2019… Not 2018.

This may be a blessing though as many films have been rushed with production and haven’t been well received, but more time for Hellboy means they can perfect everything, and judging from their decisions with castings and the initial first look, I’d say we shouldn’t be concerned, well maybe for the Blood Queen…

That’s all to report for now, but come back on Monday for a special Geek in a Week as I will sadly mourn the loss of the Cardiff Doctor Who Experience (Sigh) but expect lots more geek and nerdy news and even more awesome updates yet to come!

Until then this is Jac, signing out.
