Geek in a Week: Week 5, Part 1

Hi there and welcome back, this is your fellow geek correspondent Jac with this week’s Geek in a Week! We’re back to old regular news for now as I attempt to bring you all the news that I have missed in the past week or so! There’s plenty to talk about this week including Trevorrow, Time Travel, Titans and The Newest Dark Night in Town! So without further ado let’s head off to a galaxy far far away…

Be warned there maybe some spoilers ahead;

This week’s headline news: Colin Trevorrow no longer directing Star Wars Episode 9

It was confirmed on 5th September that Colin Trevorrow will no longer direct the final of the newest Star Wars trilogies. Trevorrow, best known for writing Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (set for 2018 release) was said to have had creative differences with current head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy. Newer reports suggest he may have been fired from the role due to the poor response to Trevorrow’s latest independent film “The Book of Henry” and the personal conflicts with the head of the company. So what’s next? Rumours are rife with who will direct the final film, from Guillermo Del Toro, Jordan Peele, JJ Abrams to even George Lucas himself. But until then we do have Episode 8: The Last Jedi set to be releases on 15th December 2017 and will set up the last part, so writing the perfect ending is a terrifying responsibility given the previous attempts in the 2000’s. Hopefully will be worth the wait as the film is said to be starting production ext year, giving plenty of time to focus on anticipated ending, and we have a few spinoff films in between, including potentially featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett, Darth Vader and the Han Solo Story next year.

Now for some super cool new castings heading to our screens, but instead of 1 we have 3! So let’s fly right in!

First of all Courtney Ford has been cast as recurring character Eleanor Darhk, daughter of the villainous Damien Darhk. Like her father, she has been described as cunning, creepy and can easily manipulate others. She will probably team up with her father to exact revenge on the Legends this season, as her father was defeated along with the other Legion of Doom members. Interestingly, Wentworth Miller has been confirmed to regularly appear again as Captain Cold, so it is unsure if his path will cross over with Damien at some point or not. We have seen Dahrk’s daughter in Arrow Season 4, only on that occasion her name was Nora and not Eleanor. Again it is unknown if Nora will be the older sister of Eleanor, or if it is possibly the same person but has been altered through time, similarly with John Diggle’s daughter turned son due to the events of Flashpoint. It certainly sounds like the Legends will have more that their work cut out if they’re facing 2 Darhk’s instead of 1.

Finally we have both Hawk and Dove cast for the live action Teen Titans!

Alan Ritchson (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lazer Team, Blue Mountain State) has been cast as Hank Hall/Hawk whilst Minka Kelly (Jane the Virgin, Just Go with It) is rumoured to have been cast as Dawn Granger/Dove. Hawk and Dove are both Agents of Chaos, with Hawk being more aggressive and Dawn being more conservative of the two. Both have various abilities such as super strength, flight and stamina and will both play recurring roles within the series, becoming more regular if there is a second season and possibly even star in a spinoff series. Both Hawk and Dove won’t be full on Titans, but will appear from time to time possibly to mentor/coach the young heroes or maybe appear as competition. Both additions are fantastic and will be the first time the romantic crime fighting duo will have appeared in live action. It is interesting to note that Alan Ritchson played the recurring role of Athur Curry aka Aquaman in the Smallville TV series back in 2005, and was tipped to play the lead role of Captain Marvel in DC’s live action Shazam film as part of the DCEU, which may still happen but seems unlikely now he has been cast as “Bird Person”.

And finally for our video of the week we have an extended Gotham promo featuring more of the new Scarecrow and Batman! This promo for the first episode has given us the most information so far; so beware as there may be some spoilers in the video below!

Since opening the Iceberg Lounge; the Penguin has been busy trying to take control of the city’s underworld once more. But as the Scarecrow emerges from the shadows, The Penguin may use his connections to rally the city against the GCPD as the Scarecrow starts his harvest of fear! We also get some new footage of Ra’s Al Ghul inside the Lazarus Pit and possibly Catwoman learning to use her new weapon. And finally we see the young Bruce Wayne in action as he suits up as the “Proto-Batman”. The trailer seems to hint that Alfred will be the only person to know of his new hobby, starting off the pair’s vigilante-based relationship. Finally we end on a shot of Bruce with his new armour in a similar to Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises. The series is now fittingly tag lined “A Dark Knight” and will be loosely based from the Batman: Year One story where Commissioner Gordon Almost goes up against Batman as he just starts out, attempting to bring the new hero to justice. This may predict that Jim Gordon in the series may follow more of the rules and do thing by the book come the end of the season, as he hasn’t been following the rules shall we say as a police officer of Gotham City. It’s now 10 days since Gotham comes back and be assured I’ll be watching the premiere and giving my thoughts on the first episode!

That’s all to report for now, but come back on Friday for more geek and nerdy news and some more awesome updates!

Until then this is Jac, signing out.
