How to (not?) get shellac off

Three weeks ago I went to get a professional shellac manicure. Today, the polish still looks incredibly good, but my nails have grown so much that it didn’t look right anymore, my polish started about halfway my nail. So I decided to try and soak it off. I said TRY…

I had watched a few videos on how to take shellac or gellish off and I must say, it looked pretty easy. You only need a few things and your gel polish comes off like a dream, without damaging your nails.

You’ll need:

A nail file

Nail polish remover with acetone

Something to put your remover in

Cotton buts

Aluminium foil

An orange stick

I started off by filing the top layer of my polish off.

What you have to do is put a little piece of cotton on the acetone, put it on your nail, wrap the foil around it and let it sit for 10 -15 minutes. After you take it off, your polish should look quite flaky, and you should be able to take it off without any effort. Sounds easy, no?

So I did what I had to do, and put some cotton pieces on the acetone. Unfortunately, I managed to get the entire table wet, it dripped as I got it out of the acetone, and as I placed it on my finger, a lot of the product got out and my fingers were covered in nail polish remover.

Anyways, I put on the aluminium foil and sat there like ET for about 15 minutes. Luckily I was smart enough to do only one hand at a time, otherwise it would have been a complete mess.

After 15 minutes I took a look at one of my fingers, and as you can see the polish had gone a bit flaky. But as I tried to pull it off it didn’t really loosen. With the other nails, it was the same, the edges had come off, but the centre was still ‘glued’ on. So I put the aluminium foil back on, and waited for another 5 minutes. I still couldn’t get it off. Another 10 minutes later, I pushed the polish off with a slight bit of force. Eventually, all the polish came off, but my nails are slightly damaged. I don’t know what went wrong, maybe you’re supposed to do it with pure acetone?

On my other hand, I had put the orange stick under the edges that had already loosened before I put on the acetone. That definitely worked better!

Some of my nails are slightly damaged, so maybe I’ll try something else next time. And I must also say that the whole process was very time consuming, it took me over an hour to get all of the nail polish off.
