K-Pop: A Beginner’s Guide

Oh Korean Pop; a colourful, crazy and surprisingly catchy genre of music that has garnered fans from all around the world. Everyone must have at least once heard of these songs, especially PSY’s record-breaking Gangnam Style. I mean, who hasn’t attempted to do the dance?

As I am a huge fan of K-Pop, I thought I’d give a brief intro about what it is and why so many people are going cray cray for it.

Warning: If you continue reading, you may fall victim to an addiction which is KPOP; proceed at your own risk.

So to begin this genre of music originates from South Korea and consists of hip-hop, R&B, electronic, rap and pop.

If you haven’t seen a K-Pop video before, then you’re going to be surprised as they looooove to go OTT on the music videos with lots of outfit changes, colourful visuals and special effects as well as some awesome choreography.

Did I mention that they are all extremely beautiful too? Whether they are a girl or a guy they always look so immaculate, whether they are human sushi girls or getting beaten up by gangs (I told you, they love going OTT).

A K-Pop artist can range from a solo singer to as many 21 members which was a group formerly known as Double B 21, but in 2014 they changed to a more manageable 15 people. Hey, more members to fan-boy/fan-girl over right?

Earlier this year, the boyband BTS (aka Bangtan Boys, Bulletproof Boy Scouts or Beyond The Scene) make history by beating the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande to win the BillBoard Music Award for Top Social Artist.

This was such an incredible feat and this could not have happened without their loyal fanbase of fans known as ‘A.R.M.Y’ (Adorable Representative M.C’s for Youth) tweeting the hashtag #BTSBBMAS more than 300 million times!

If you’ve gotten this far, I bet you’re curious about the K-Pop jams but don’t know who to listen to? Well, I’ve got you as I have provided some of my most recommended songs below:
